Storing Your Holiday Decor
/Are you ready to take down and store all your holiday decorations but want a new system so next year it’s even easier to get out and put up? We know we are! To help you along we’ve compiled some of our favorite tips and product for making your holidays the smoothest they’ve ever been.
First things first: edit what you’ve used! Before you give in and shove everything back into the storage you’ve used before, take some time to go through everything and decide if it’s keep, toss, or donate. Don’t waste energy packing and then unpacking something you don’t love. Keep bags or shipping boxes left from all those Amazon gifts nearby to gather things for donating or keeping.
One thing to consider is that if you didn’t use something this year, then you don’t love it and it can be donated. [There are exceptions of course!]
Store items in good condition. If something is dirty, clean it. If something is broken decide if you’re going to fix it or toss it. It’s much harder to resurrect an item after its been in storage for a year (or longer).
Label it ALL. Labeling is key, especially for things you don’t access that often. Try labeling bins by room so next year you know exactly what goes where.
Now for the fun stuff: PRODUCTS TO HELP YOU STORE YOUR STUFF!
LIGHTS
Lets start with those strands that you always dread getting tangled. You were so careful, HOW did they get so tangled??! It’s a mystery. But there are wonderful products that will help you avoid the tangle.
ORNAMENTS
Ornaments should go in stackable bins with compartments for protection. We recommend clear bins organized by color, design, or the tree they belong to. If you want even more security, you can wrap each ornament in bubble wrap.
TREES
If you have an artificial tree there are a couple of ways you can store it: vertically in a tree bag or taken apart and in a bin. This will depend on what your storage space looks like, of course.
WREATHS
A crushed wreath is our least favorite thing to pull out. To save our favorites from this fate, we use containers specifically for wreaths. This way they’re good as new when you pull them out next year. (psst! some of these work great for garlands too!)
WRAPPINGS
Depending on the space you have in your home you have plenty of options for storing your collection of wrapping paper, ribbon, gift bags, tags, etc. If you have the room you can even create a “one-stop-shop” where everything you need is in one place - and includes supplies for all your other wrapping needs throughout the year. Our personal favorite is the portable wrap station.
EVERYTHING ELSE
For all the other holiday decor items (stockings, table settings, tree skirts, nativity scenes, Santa figures, etc.) you can use clear, stackable bins. We highly recommend labeling by room to make the unpacking and decorating even easier next year. Another hot tip: place a list at the top of each bin of what you need to buy for next year. That way when you pull out your boxes next year you know exactly what to replace or buy to complete your decor dreams.
There are, of course, a multitude of options for storing each and every element of your decor but this list should give you a great start. We wish you the happiest of organizing times!
Hope you had a happy and safe holiday season!
